West Point Lake is one of LaGrange’s best-kept secrets. Whether you’re chasing calm moments in nature, craving some action on the water, or just looking to kick back by the shore, LaGrange has exactly what you need for a laid-back lake escape. Here’s how to make the most of three days by the water.

3 DAYS

  • Hit the water by boat, paddle board or jet ski
  • Explore the protected shoreline parks
  • Toss out a line and see what's biting

Day 1

Hit the Water

  • Take to the water
  • Grab a lakeside bite
  • Take a sunset cruise to end the day
Day one is all about enjoying the beauty of the lake at your own pace, and there’s no better way to do that than by boat. Whether you bring your own boat or rent one from Highland Pines Marina, get ready for a serene and unforgettable experience with more than 500 miles of shoreline to explore.
Bring your boat (or rent one from Highland Marina) and try your hand at wakeboarding, water skiing, or tubing on the vast expanse of West Point Lake. With ample quiet coves for swimming and tubing, the lake offers ideal conditions for a family-friendly water experience.
Accessible by water, park your boat or jet ski at one of the many docks for a mid-day pint or relax on the patio with a delicious meal with the family. The restaurant’s atmosphere is relaxing, to say the least, and casual, so no need to dress up! The menu features a pleasing selection of fresh fish, hearty burgers, yummy appetizers, salads and more.
As the day winds down, embark on a smooth sunset cruise. Watch the sky change in color as you cruise along the water. It’s the perfect way to end a relaxing day on the lake. As the night begins to come alive, keep your eyes open for the rare species of owl that inhabit the area!

Day 2

Explore the Shoreline

  • Head to the Beach
  • Hit the Trails
  • Meet Back at the Campsite
Kick back by the water with your toes in the sand, or take the family on a laid-back hike through one of our lakeside parks—where the views are great and spotting wildlife is part of the fun. Then head back to your campsite to relax with the whole crew.
The seasonal beach at Yellowjacket Creek Recreation Area provides a safe and enjoyable area for kids and adults to splash around.
Lace up your hiking shoes and venture into the surrounding nature trails. West Point Lake’s shores offer picturesque hiking routes with stunning views of the lake, a peek at the local wildlife, and miles of shoreline to toss a line.
Campers have their pick of seven well-maintained campgrounds around West Point Lake—many with easy access to boat ramps, and shoreline access for fishing and swimming areas. It’s everything you need for a fun, laid-back getaway the whole family will enjoy.

Day 3

Cast a Line

  • Start Your Day with a Cast
  • Take in the Local Wildlife
  • End on a Sweet Note
Before you head home, don’t miss the perfect send-off: a fresh catch and birdwatching for some of the state’s rarest birds.
The 26,000-acre reservoir of West Point Lake offers a variety of fishing options, whether you fish from a boat or the dock. Spend some time casting your lines into the clear waters and see if you can reel in some impressive catches. If your typical fishing trip consists of no bites, consider one of the seasoned guides that call the lake home.
Keep your cameras ready to capture stunning shots of wildlife, as well as the picturesque scenery surrounding the lake. Rare species of birds known to frequent the lake include Bald Eagles, Blue Grosbeaks and the Pied-billed Grebe. More common species include osprey, whose signature nesting posts are scattered throughout the lake, woodpeckers and herons.
Before you hit the road, swing by Rock Salt Milk Bar in LaGrange’s historic Hillside Neighborhood for a sweet treat. Enjoy fresh, homemade ice cream by the scoop, in a bowl, or in one of their house-made waffle cones—or go big with a sundae or milkshake made from their signature flavors. Still hungry? Take a stroll through the walkable Hillside District and stop in at Oink Joint or Beacon Brewing Co. for a laid-back lunch.
