Day 2

Nature & Spirituality

  • Tour a historic home and gardens
  • Get a world-famous hot dog at Charlie Joseph's
  • Explore the history of LaGrange
Visit Hills & Dales Estate, a magnificent Italian Renaissance-style mansion surrounded by stunning gardens. Tour the inside of this historic home and take a walk through the luscious gardens, many of which were inspired by the Bible. Sarah Ferrell, who planted many of the boxwoods over 100 years ago, drew inspiration from Genesis and Numbers, among other books.

A MAJESTIC GARDEN STROLL

Completed in 1916, the 13,000 square foot home was designed to flow gracefully into its gardens—a series of dwarf boxwood parterres planted by Sarah Ferrell, which have adorned the terraces of the hill for more than 175 years and is considered one of the best-preserved 19th-century gardens in the country.

ENJOY A WORLD-FAMOUS HOT DOG

Charlie Joseph’s has been serving up world famous hot dogs since 1920 and is known for its large collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia. Enjoy southern classics like slaw dogs, Brunswick stew and juicy burgers at this iconic LaGrange eatery. The large Coca-Cola mural and plethora of collectibles take you back to the days when a Coke was just a nickel.

THE INSPIRING SIGHTS

OF DOWNTOWN LAGRANGE

LaGrange (and greater Troup county) are home to hundreds of local parish communities. Some of the area’s most beautiful churches are located in downtown LaGrange, and are an inspiring sight for visitors. Take in the sights on a walking tour of downtown, dine in a historic parish hall and take a scenic drive through Troup County, exploring churches dating back nearly 200 years.
There are many congregations in Troup County and LaGrange that have been gathering for over 150 years. Flat Shoals Baptist Church (pictured) was incorporated in 1829, giving it almost 200 years of history. Many of these churches can be appreciated from the exterior, meaning you can enjoy these places outside of a Sunday morning. If you do find yourself in town on a weekend, most parishes would love to share a service with guests.
Taste of Lemon, housed in an old church building that was once the Second Methodist Church, was constructed in 1892 and now serves as a local hotspot for Southern cooking. Stepping inside, you’ll be transported back in time with the original stained glass windows, vaulted ceilings, and unique architectural features. But it’s the Southern comfort cuisine that steals the show.
Pass old homes and historic buildings in a variety of architectural styles on this walking tour of LaGrange, as well as fashionable shops and charming restaurants. Many historic churches can be seen along these routes, such as First Baptist, First Presbyterian, Broad Street Church of Christ (Pictured) and St. Mark’s Episcopal.
