ARCHITECTURE & FAITH

OF DOWNTOWN LAGRANGE

Discover LaGrange’s most iconic churches with a self-guided tour of First Presbyterian, St. Mark’s Episcopal, and First United Methodist, and The Congregation Beth-El, a Jewish synagogue. Admire stained glass, architecture, and the ongoing stories of local faith. Lunch in a historic parish hall and take a scenic drive through Troup County, exploring churches dating back nearly 200 years.
Taste of Lemon, housed in an old church building that was once the Second Methodist Church, was constructed in 1892 and now serves as a local hotspot for Southern cooking. Stepping inside, you’ll be transported back in time with the original stained glass windows, vaulted ceilings, and unique architectural features. But it’s the Southern comfort cuisine that steals the show.
There are many congregations in Troup County and LaGrange that have been gathering for over 150 years. Flat Shoals Baptist Church (pictured) was incorporated in 1829, giving it almost 200 years of history. Many of these churches can be appreciated from the exterior, meaning you can enjoy these places outside of a Sunday morning. If you do find yourself in town on a weekend, most parishes would love to share a service with guests.
Pretty Good Books now occupies the former Covenant Presbyterian Church, built in 1844 by Benjamin H. Cameron with its signature plastered Doric columns. Once the site of notable events—including the 1885 Georgia Synod heresy trial of Rev. Dr. James Woodrow, uncle of President Woodrow Wilson—the historic space now invites visitors to browse books where history and faith once met.

Day 3

Nature & Spirituality

  • Tour the historic Hills & Dales Estate home and gardens
  • Experience garden tranquility
  • Explore the history of LaGrange
Visit Hills & Dales Estate, a magnificent Italian Renaissance-style mansion surrounded by stunning gardens. Tour the inside of this historic home and the serene 19th-century gardens once cultivated by Sarah Ferrell, whose designs were inspired by Biblical geometry and order. Guided garden tours offer insight into how faith shaped the land’s layout and care.
Completed in 1916, the 13,000 square foot home was designed to flow gracefully into its gardens—a series of dwarf boxwood parterres planted by Sarah Ferrell, which have adorned the terraces of the hill for more than 175 years and is considered one of the best-preserved 19th-century gardens in the country.
Step into the Church Garden, a serene space first shaped by Sarah Coleman Ferrell in 1841 and enriched by generations of caretakers. With its altar, pews, and harp-shaped boxwood hedges, this garden reflects a living history—old trees from Sarah’s era still stand, and carefully chosen plants symbolize the congregation and choir. Over time, the garden became a peaceful white sanctuary, inviting visitors to reflect, relax, and connect with the stories it holds.
A historic home where Southern charm meets timeless elegance. Tour the house, you’ll discover beautifully preserved rooms filled with original furnishings, intricate woodwork, and stunning architectural details that tell the story of the families who called this place home. Guided tours provide fascinating insights into the home’s past, the people who lived here, and the remarkable gardens that surround the property, making every visit a journey through history and beauty.
